REPENTANCE OR GOOD WORKS?
[Preached at
Community Bible Chapel in Hico, TX by Andy Neckar]
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (KJV)
Christ’s DEATH is what saves sinners. Christ paid the penalty God enacted on sin. Once the penalty is paid there is no condemnation to them that believe the gospel because God imputed that death to our behalf. God GIVES us the righteousness of Christ.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (KJV)
When we come to BELIEVE Christ we are IN Christ. If we believe that obedience saves us then we are in a gospel of works in which there is no salvation.
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: (KJV)
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJV)
If obedience saves us then why did Christ have to die. Obedience is of the Law which was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. We could not obey the Law. We tried and we couldn’t. We came to believe we were lost without Christ.
When we come to believe in faith, we are saved. The gospel of Christ, (His death in our place, and His resurrection) is the power of God unto salvation.
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (KJV)
Are you 100% in obedience to the Lord’s commands? To break only one is the same as breaking them all.
James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. (KJV)
Believing the gospel of Christ is the ONLY command to be saved. The rest of the commands are to please God.
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. (KJV)
The devils believe IN God, but they don’t
BELIEVE GOD. Most lost sinners believe there is a God. Belief IN God does not
save us. BELIEVING THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST does though.REPENTANCE
I believe many so-called Christians
are seriously mistaken in the meaning of repentance. Repentance is not merely
apologizing, is it "turning from sin". The soul is made righteous in Christ and
turns from sin. We do not live in the way we did before. We sin, yes, but not
willfully or habitually.
Jesus says to REPENT and believe the gospel. (Mark 1:15). That’s what is wrong with the churches today. Hardly NO ONE is preaching repentance anymore. No more accountability to God. Trust in Christ and you can LIVE LIKE HELL is what many churches preach. When we believe, the Holy Spirit "brings" us to repentance.
Why do you think believers are "indwelled" by the Holy Spirit of God? Cannot one "trust" Christ and leave it at that? Apparently not. God indwells us with His Spirit to "bring us to repentance" when we sin and to "seal us" unto that day of redemption.
2 Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. (KJV)
The above verse tells us that we do not repent of our own selves, that Godly sorrow works repentance to salvation.
2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV)
Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (KJV)
Look at this: REPENTANCE AND FAITH. . Faith evidently fosters, or produces repentance.
We need to STUDY not just READ the Bible
you know. Some say the way is remorse. Do you know what remorse is?
REPENTANCE.FAITH
WITHOUT WORKS
Works are a "result" of our salvation. Salvation is not
"because" of works.Faith without works is not a saving
faith. .Faith without works is belief only. The devils also believe and
tremble.
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
There is a great difference between belief and believing in faith.
James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
God says have faith and God says show faith. We show faith by doing good works.
Verse 18. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
How can one show the world their faith without works, (an outward manifestation or showing) of their faith. One cannot show their faith without works. James said he can show his faith by his works. We do not do good works because we think we have to do them to be saved. Works come automatically, because God created believers in Christ Jesus unto, or for good works.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
James says these things because he knows that true faith will produce good works in the believer. God said; "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto (with regards to, concerning) good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk (as proof of, be occupied with) in them".SAVING FAITH PRODUCES GOOD WORKS. A FAITH WITHOUT GOOD WORKS IS A DEAD FAITH. (Not a saving faith) Good works are the fruit of salvation, but good works do not produce salvation. Good works of unsaved people are as filthy rags.
Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
You ask; "If you proclaim your faith in
Jesus Christ but do not do good works, are you
saved?"The
answer:
Rom 4:2-5 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to
glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God,
and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the
reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that "worketh not", but
believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for
righteousness.BUT-Abraham BELIEVED God and then went about
to DO what God said.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained (commanded) that we should walk in them.
If we are NOT doing GOOD WORKS we better examine ourselves to see if we are in the SAVING FAITH. How can we claim that we are created in Jesus Christ WITHOUT good works? How do we know we were created in Jesus Christ at all? If we were NOT created in Jesus Christ, we are still lost in our sins and on our way to hell.
